Should I Get DJ Insurance
This is a very good question! In this day and age, the “suing culture!” You NEED to be protected. Gone are the days when you can just buy or make your equipment, stick an advert up in your local shop and wait for the jobs to come rolling in, secure a job, turn up and DJ. This is long gone my friend. So the answer to that question is yes. For you and your clients. Many clients and venues ask for this now.
The first thing to insure I would say is your equipment. You have just spent your hard earned money (when I say hard earned it’s because your worked for someone else for minimal money and long hours!) on some nice new speakers, amps, cd players, mixers ect. What happens if they got stolen from your vehicle whilst loading or unloading? What would you do if a drunk party-goer knocked your lights down or spilt their drink all over your mixer? Would you really want to use the money you got paid that night to replace your gear?…….Of course not, and why should you! Get your equipment insured. Make sure that it includes place of storage, in transit and at the venue. Companies like DJ Guard will do this. The cost for insurance depends on your address and total cost of your equipment.
Next is Public Liability. Why? Because this will protect you from bankruptcy if someone trips on a lose cable, gets electrocuted or you damage a venue. Some venues like museums and historic buildings may require a higher amount of public liability, but if you are just starting out then I would say between £2m and £5m liability should be fine. Once again this can be covered with DJ Guard and included with your equipment insurance.
If you are going to DJing at schools or for any children’s parties I would recommend you get police or CRB checked, (this is now a necessity in the UK if you are permanently working with children). This will also help with your bookings. If a parent want’s to book a DJ for their child’s birthday and they find one who isn’t checked and one who is, who do you think they would book?
Lastly. If you are downloading music to burn on CD or use a laptop to play music in digital format then you will need to get a Pro Dub licence. Even if you are burning your cd’s onto your computer to later burn onto other discs. The cost for this licence all depends on how much you change to digital format. They have different price bands for different amounts. But they are getting hotter and hotter now. They don’t just approach venues and ask them if their DJ’s have a licence, they are coming straight to the DJ themselves.
This licence is there to protect the writers and artists, making sure they get there slice of the pie. Whether you agree with this or not, it is now a requirement.
